79 Hitachi Flashing Without A Passkey Tutorial

Tutorial: Download 79unlock Files

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

1. Unrar the file
2. Burn the CD Image (use the .CUE File), I used ImgBurn….

(tips)
Burn the .bin file in the package by loading the .cue file (cue sheet) into IMGBurn 2.4.1.0 - this MUST be burnt to a CD-R

3. Put 79 in Mode B With Slax 2.1
Next… Insert the CD in the 79 and play the track, wait for it to finish…

(tips)
I find VLC media player the best to use for step 4, you can double click the play button to do play/pause quick enough. Available free from www.videolan.org

4. Then press play again and straight away pause it, you should hear some noise
5. Eject the disk, using the eject button on the drive not on the PC ( it does something different)
6. Run the the command in a command window(cmd)
79Unlock h
// where h is the drive letter of the 79

(Tips)
Use Ms PowerToy “Open Command Window Here” if you want to right click the folder and have the cmd appear.

7. If all went well bit 4 of (0×5BD) should be set and the drive should be unlocked

(tips)
You need to insert a 360 game or DVD before step 8, just like if you were using a passkey.

8. Drive will dump and flash with Firmware Toolbox 4.0+…

This is a temporary unlock, (0×5BD) is in RAM and would need to be done each time you power the drive.

(tips)
Remember guys, if you’re flashing any of the Hitachi drives there’s always the risk of bricking since you’re patching the sectors. Getting to the TSOP on the 79 makes it that much harder to resolve, so make sure you’re flashing it on a stable/clean install of XP to significantly reduce the risk

Q.
after you close vlc or media player, remove the cd and you leave the tray open or closed?
A.
You dont need to close VLC, but you need to eject after the play/pause or it will not unlock.

Q.
so playing backups with this can get you banned on xbox live????
A.
No matter what method you use to flash your drive, playing backups run this risk of being banned.
The drive is modded the same it would be if a passkey was fitted, its dumped / flashed in Toolbox still.

The hack is the same as before, just the ‘unlocking’ that’s changed.

Live situation will never change.

Use at own risk

Q.
not recognized as an internal or external command…….
A.
Try learning DOS commands, that error simply means there is not a batch or executable file associated to that command - 79unlock x means that there must be a .bat / .exe file called 79unlock in the directory you are at.

Q.
If you can’t figure out how to CMD the 79unlock because of drive variable then read on.
A.
I was helping a friend try to figure this out and was having trouble in cmd . first find CMD by Start / run / CMD hit enter. I un-rared folder then open folders until you see 79Unlock .exe icon, copy it to desktop, now in CMD type after the drive letter Mine was C:\desktop settings crap(Start from here) \desktop\79Unlock c ( or what ever drive letter you have) this my work around if you are getting error in command prompt that drive is not detected or cant see the file etc.

1 CMD ( open by Start/ Accessories/ Command Prompt)
2 Copy 79Unlock.exe to desktop
3 in CMD type - \desktop\79Unlock c ( or Drive letter you have)
You will see it say Done!

ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS when using DOS commands keep the full directory as short as possible, it has a character limit, you don’t wanna exceed it as it only causes issues.

Wont work in Vista 64 bit, so in case you wondering.
Vista 32 worked fine.

Q.
ok so i have a Hitachi 79 and someone put a passkey in for me and im wondering if later on when a new
firmware comes out can i flash it straight to the passkey?
A.
If you already have the passkey installed and working you don’t need this. Just flash it with toolbox.

@ Anon

I’m not really sure about Vista 64bit because I don’t use it. You can always dual boot xp.

Maybe someone else can help with that question.

I have to press the button 3 times to keep the drive closed and the green light keeps on flashing. if i press it twice the green light will flash and the drive will come out. however the 79FK drives does show up on the computer and when i click on eject the drives ejects. Should i go ahead and use the 79 Unloack?

When i put the 79FK in mode B I have to press the button three times and the green light keeps on flashing. If i press it twice the drive will go in, the green light will flash and the drive will open. However the Drive does show up in my computer and i can click on eject to open the 79FK. should i go ahead and try to flash it?

Pressing the button 3 times before it closes is one indication you are in modeB. Having the drive show up on the computer means your ready for the next step. Everything sounds normal so far to me. Follow the textbook Tutorial.

Hey, I am pretty smart on computers but am having a weird problem. As soon as I run 79unlock it says Done! but my computer basically stops responding after that. I’ve rebooted and tried this several times. At that point I can not get the DVD drive to eject either (using the button or software ejecting). Has anyone else had this problem or could someone try and help me get around this? ~ Thanks

After putting the drive into mode b, I followed the steps by removing the slax cd, making sure the sata cable to the via card is unplugged, when I get to the windows boot screen I plug the sata cable to the dvd-rom drive and eject like in the video until windows gets to my desktop, this is where the drive remains open…the dvd-rom will eject everytime I close the drive it pops right back out…any ideas on how to get passed this?

Nevermind my last post, I ejected and closed the drive several times…seemed to stay closed after a few tries. I’ve successfully flashed 3 other 360’s before this one, all different drives, this is the first 79fk i’ve encountered. Nice learning experience. Thanks for your tutorial it helped. :)

I am having a problem using the 79unlock on a Vista 32 bit OS. I used SLax2.1 and have sit in mode B, I rand the wave file all the way through once then start and pause quickly. When i try to run the 79unlock from a cmd window, the command window appears for a brief moment and then it is gone. I am running with admin priv too. I don’t know what to do next… I have tried on 3 different computers with the same thing every time. help……..
