Xbox 360 Error Codes
Posted on March 31st, 2007 at 2:16 am by Jason@TeamXmods

THIS ERROR CODE GUIDE IS IN NO WAY OFFICIAL. WE DO NOT MAKE ANY CLAIMS TO IT’S ACCURACY.

If there is a problem with the Xbox360 The LEDs in the ring of light will flash in a particular pattern. The pattern itself leads some insight to the problem. Certain patterns will lead to numbered error codes which will provide further insight to the problem. The numbered error codes are described below their corresponding LED code.

After reading this guide if you’d like to discuss the problems you’re experiencing with others you can do so in the following thread: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=462099

these are the codes we know so far…

=============================

SECTIONS 1, 2, 3, AND 4 ARE FLASHING RED

- The AV cable cannot be detected

ring of death

 (THINGS TO TRY)

1. Make sure that the AV cable is correctly connected to the Xbox 360 console.
2. Disconnect the AV cable from the Xbox 360 console, and then reconnect the AV cable to the Xbox 360 console.
3. If the four flashing red lights continue to flash, try wiping the metal area of the AV pack with a dry cloth. The metal area is the end that plugs into the console. Wipe the metal area thoroughly, and then try the AV Pack again.
4. If the AV cable is correctly connected but the four red lights are still flashing, substitute a different AV cable if you have one available.

=============================

SECTIONS 1, 3, AND 4 ARE FLASHING RED

- General Hardware Failure

ring of death

Check the secondary Error Code per the instructions in the section below

 (THINGS TO TRY)

1. Try restarting the console.
2. If restarting the console does not resolve the behavior, follow these steps:
* Turn the console off.
* Unplug all the power and AV cables from the console.
* Unplug the power cord from the wall socket.
* Firmly reconnect all the cables.
* Turn on the console.
3. If these steps do not resolve the behavior, turn the console off, remove the hard drive, and then turn on the console. If the 3x Red LED error light is no longer displayed, turn the console off, re-attach the hard drive, and then turn on the console.
4. Also examine the lights on the power supply. When you turn on the console, the power supply light should illuminate green even if the three lights on the RoL flash red.

=============================

SECTIONS 1, AND 3 ARE FLASHING RED

- Overheating

ring of death

Alternatively Overheating can be cause by the console locking up or “freezing” after a set amount of time. Lockups that occur at a specific point in a game are generally problems with the game itself and not caused by overheating.

 (THINGS TO TRY)

1. Let the Xbox 360 console cool.
Note You may have to wait several hours for the console to cool enough. Do not turn on the console when the console is hot.
2. Verify that the console has sufficient ventilation and that the fan is operating.

PREVENTION SUGGESTIONS
To try to prevent this problem, use the following precautions:

* Do not block any ventilation openings on the Xbox 360 console.
* Do not put the Xbox 360 console on a bed, on a sofa, or on any other soft surface that may block ventilation openings.
* Do not put the Xbox 360 console in a confined space, such as a bookcase, a rack, or a stereo cabinet, unless the space is well-ventilated.
* Do not put the Xbox 360 console near any heat source, such as a radiator, a heat register, a stove, or an amplifier.

DO NOT EVER PUT YOUR CONSOLE IN THE FREEZER OR OUT IN COLD WEATHER
Some people think that doing this might help “fix” an overheating console, in fact doing so could cause even bigger problems. Electronic devices like your console are made to function at and around room temperature, extreme cold temperatures can often cause just as many problems as extreme warm temperatures (such as overheating). Also if the console is located in a dramatically cold area while running, the difference in temperature between the hot console and cold air can create condensation which in turn will short out your console making the situation far worse. Condensation will happen more quickly if your console is overheating due to the greater difference in temperature. In short… DON’T DO IT.

A more aggressive Solution to overheating is to improve the cooling system of the console. The best solution is to replace the thermal compound. If you attempt this you do so at your own risk. If you’re console is still under warranty it is recommended that you contact MS for a replacement before attempting to fix it yourself.

=============================

SECTION 4 IS FLASHING RED

- Hardware Failure

ring of death

The Specific Type of hardware failure can be determined by the error code displayed on the screen.
If the screen is blank or you would like additional information follow the instructions for determining the secondary error code in the section below

E45: Unknown (possibly dashboard update related)

E64: DVD Drive Error…. DVD Timeout, Wrong firmware, dvd is without f/w chip, etc.

E65: DVD Drive Error…. DVD Timeout, Wrong firmware, dvd is without f/w chip, etc. This can also be caused by the tray not being fully closed on boot.

E66: DVD Drive Error: DVD model, or version does not match that of the version expected by the dashboard. OR the firmware version on the drive is older then the firmware version expected by the dashboard. Make sure the DVD drive is of the same version originally included with the console and that it is using either the original firmware included with the console or newer.

E67: Hard Drive Error… It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it

E68: Hard Drive Error… It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it, This can also be caused by a Hard Drive Eprom Error. Some also believe this might be caused by a problem with the fans.

E69: Hard Drive Error… It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it

E71: possibly a dashboard update error, there is no solution at present the console must be sent back to MS for repair

E72: (not yet known)

E73: General Hardware Error: Ethernet port… this error is caused by a problem with the Ethernet port.

E74: AV cable error… There is a problem with the AV cable, try using a different AV cable. (this could also be a problem with the internal AV encoder chip)

E76: (not yet known)

E79: Hard Drive Error… It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it

=============================

SECONDARY ERROR CODES
The specific type of hardware failure can be determined by a “hidden” error code

* Turn the xbox 360 on, and wait till the 3 red lights are flashing.
* Press and hold the sync up button (the small white one), while holding that button press the eject button.
* The LEDs will now blink the first number in the code (as described below).
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the second number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the third number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will now blink the forth number of the code.
* Release the eject button and press it again.
* The LEDs will go back to the 3 red flashing lights.

You should be able to determine the difference between the 3 flashing lights and the error code lights by the rate in which they flash.

Here is how you interpret the LEDs to get the code number:

* All four lights flashing - 0
* One light flashing - 1
* Two Lights flashing - 2
* Three lights flashing - 3

0001 power supply problem
0002 Network Interface problem
0003 (not yet known) (might be PSU might be GPU/CPU)
0010 over heating
0011 over heating - If you are receiving this error after disassembling your console make sure to all 8 of the heatsink screws are tightened securely to the board/heatsink holes.
0012 over heating
0013 over heating
0020 (Not yet known, possibly overheating)
0021 DVD Drive Time out - Can be caused by problems with a firmware flash. This is also speculated to sometime be caused by a problem with the southbridge chipset on the motherboard.
0022 GPU Error / GPU Overheating
0023 (not yet known)

0101 (not yet known)
0102 unknown error - though it’s most likely GPU related literally means the console does not know what is wrong. possibly a short or cold solder joint somewhere. So far there is 1 major theory for what causes most of these errors is that the Ram, CPU, or GPU are not soldered properly to the mother board due either to poor manufacturing or excessive heat up and cool down cycles that stress, weaken and eventually break the soldered connection. This can be solved by re-Heating the chips DO NOT attempt this if your console is still under warranty. If your console is still under warranty return it to the store where it was purchased or call MS to have it replaced. I have also heard of limited success by simply switching the AV cable from “HDTV” mode to “TV” mode.
0103 (not yet known)
0110 Memory Error / Memory Overheating - see solution for error 0102

0200 (not yet known)

1000 (not yet known)
1001 (not yet known)
1002 (not yet known)
1003 Hard Drive Error… It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it
1010 Hard Drive Error, Can be caused buy a corrupt or missing eprom.
1011 (not yet known)
1012 (not yet known)
1013 (not yet known) possibly a dashboard update error
1020 (not yet known)
1021 (not yet known)
1022 AV cable error… There is a problem with the AV cable, try using a different AV cable. (could also be a problem with the encoder chip)
1023 DVD drive not connected, connect DVD drive to boot
1030 (not yet known)
1031 (not yet known)
1032 (not yet known)
1033 (not yet known)

Im sorry to say this but I recommend having MS fix ‘red ring of light issues’. These repair shops($50+) that perform the heat gun trick can only offer a temporary fix. MS will give you a 1 year warranty and fix or replace your xbox 360 for $140. It cant hurt for you to try the heat gun trick yourself but i wouldn’t recommend paying someone to do it for you. (not yet anyway)

I just wanted to drop by and let ya know that my boyfriend has one of the launch Xbox 360’s and just recently it experienced the RoL… xbox kept telling him his warranty was out and that he had to pay but today he called again and was told that all consoles made in 2005 have automatically been given an extra year of warranty…s o if you qualitfy… call them up, it’s all free!

Comment by Jocelyn — April 21, 2007 @ 12:07 am

Hi,

I got the 0001 error, power supply problem. Everything I read said this was a heating issue so I opened the box and put a fan on it while playing and still got the errors.
I couldn’t find anyone to sell a new PS so I rang microsoft who seemed more than happy to help.
Despite me explaining the error code and how I thought it must be a power supply issue the help operator told me it was the Kernel and I had to send my 360 into them. I wrote a letter explaining why I opened the box for ventilation and also sent them a copy of my warranty and receipt.
2 weeks later I received my 360 back in the mail with a short letter saying my warranty seal was broken and therefore my 360 had been tampered with and I’m on my own!
I couldn’t believe this, not only did they ignore my explanatory letter they didn’t even offer me another avenue for repair, even at a charge if necessary. They didn’t attempt an email or a phone call or anything.

thank you microsoft for leaving me in the dark after spending in excess of $1000 on your console and peripherals. never again.

Comment by Ben — May 1, 2007 @ 2:00 am

Hi Ben, :)

MS does that to everyone so don’t take it personally. They don’t do much to help you if your seal is broken. Still the best thing to do is pay the $140 for them to fix it. There really is no other reliable option for repair as of yet.

Comment by Jason@Teamxbox — May 1, 2007 @ 2:45 am

Hi Jason,

do they actually offer a repair service for boxes with the seal broken in Australia? as they didn’t offer this service to me at all…

Yesterday I rang a mobile I found on the internet for a ‘360 repair person’ in the local area and he told me that it is generally a chip on the motherboard that has fried to cause this 0001 error. He told me that it will cost me between $170 - $230 for him to fix it plus he installs a custom fan add on to avoid the over heating issues again.

What do you think?

Comment by Ben — May 2, 2007 @ 12:50 am

To Ben, :)

Well all i know is that if I could fix xbox 360’s and charge for repair I would do it. What i can do is charge for a temporary fix with the ‘heat gun trick’ but i don’t recommend anyone paying someone to do that for them. The money would be better spent on MS repair or replacement service with added 1 year warranty. It has been reported that most 360’s with the ‘heat gun trick’ quit working again after 1-3 months.

He may be right about the chip frying and giving the 0001 error but that price is way too much. You can just send it to Ms in the states for repair, but i don’t know about Aussie.

There is no reason for ms not to except your xbox for repair. Last I checked, a 360 out of warranty costs $140 usd to have them repair, plus now you have to pay shipping. I never had to do this so i have no first hand experience. I have had my 360 from launch without troubles.

Comment by Jason@Teamxbox — May 2, 2007 @ 1:25 am

Hi Jason,

thanks for your responses.
I think the price will be similar no matter what I choose as $140usd + shipping to and from Oz would equate to approx $220 aud anyways.
If this guy can gaurantee his work then I may take a chance as he has a shop and isn’t likely to run away with my console.

I’ll post again once I get some results. Thanks for your help.

My 360 started giving me the e68 Warning. In a fit of rage i punched it and it started working. No lie. It still pops up every now and again though

I have a six month old 360 with 3 red lights and 0102 secondary. I called 1-800-4-my-xbox on 6/26/7 and they are gonna fix it for free! I will let you know when I get it back. I am feeling shock and awe. Apple don’t do dat and I never thought MS would either.

Comment by joel — July 6, 2007 @ 7:00 am

MS has a 3year warranty now so no more reason to complain. I have even send modded xboxes back for repair (if done right)(sticker looks untampered with).

My 2 week old xbox 360 elite cut out while i was playing and i showed the three red lights of death i read somewhere it means it cant be fixed and you have to send it back. but i unplgged the power cord forbout 15 mins plugged it back in and it worked ok. but ive only played it for about 2 hours since then

Comment by Collin — August 6, 2007 @ 3:33 pm

all i got is 1 question. the ring of death (the red error ring), happened to my 360 few days ago. i tryed everything u said. but ive made up my mind, im going to buy the elite. but b4 i do that. can anythng like that happen to it?? or is it just for the regular 360??

Comment by Don — August 7, 2007 @ 3:59 pm

The Elite!!!!!!!!! is nothing but a black premium with hdmi. I have gotten reports that all new xboxes whether they are elite or premium/core are being sold with new heatsinks. If you want to buy a 360 system with no problems wait for the 65nm chip process to ship. :) Even better the new premiums are comming with Hdmi. Hdmi is full digital connection greatness. This connection is even better then Component most say.

Comment by Jason@Teamxbox — August 8, 2007 @ 7:12 pm

My son has recently purchased the xbox elite 360 and he hardty played with it. We were on vacation. Well when we returned and he set it up to start playing the unit gave him an error code E65 . I am trying every possible way to sent it back for repair but no luck so far. We do not live in the United States although the unit was brought there. He cannot even register the unit on line because our country is not listed on the website.
Everytime I call the repair center I get this robot on line trying to talk me out of calling and when I finally get a person the connection breaks off.

Comment by Ivonne — August 19, 2007 @ 7:44 pm

Well I have a little insight to error code 1002!Every one of these xbox 360 error code lists I see posted throughout the web all say error code 1002 is not yet known.Well I have an xbox 360 with error code 1002 and when booted it will not boot to the dash or even display anything on the screen.Well when I dissconnect the sata cable connecting the dvd drive but leave the power cable connected the red lights go away and the 360 boots perfectly to the dashboard!Now I have tried connecting other known working 360 drives to the mobo but when the sata is plugged in it gives the same code when it should give me a different error code for having the wrong drive key like 0021 so it has to be something with the sata connection/reading of the drive.Just thought that might help people out a bit trying to fix that code and I will post back if I find a solution.CrypticAssassin!

My xbox 360 just stopped working and game me the 3 red lights error. I called up microsoft customer service. They are going to ship a box and fix it for free and give me a month of xbox live for free. The only problem is that i pre-ordered halo 3 and i wont be able to play it for a couple of weeks. Oh well…

Comment by James — September 22, 2007 @ 10:23 pm

I purchaced a Xbox 360 elite, in the UK, 4 days after it’s arrival, i recieved the E64 error’s, i didnt play it for a week, (on holiday) came back, powered up and it worked, transfered all my saves to a memory card, and played off that for 3hrs now, but now im getting a E65 message. Does anyone know of a fix or is it a return to m$ and wait a month, or 2? Removing all plugs works long enough 2 get into the menu’s however running a game will crash it within minutes.

*Just be warnned the Elite is no better*

Comment by Jon — September 27, 2007 @ 4:13 pm

I sent mine away with error code 0020 cos it fucked up they sent me it back with error code 0102 lol useless. Microsoft has all this money and they put it together with crappy cheap parts. Not only that i can’t get it exchanged for a new one and i can’t play it there probably send it back broke again and i’ll have to keep sending it back and fourth till my warranty runs out. If i’d known all this when i paid £300 for it 6 or 7 months ago i would have never of brought the peace of shit.

Comment by Lee — October 3, 2007 @ 6:43 am

i got a 360elite, 3 days later, i cannot get rid of the E65 error message, is there firmware i can install or something which can get rid of this. I dont want to send off my 360 unless i need too (im in the UK btw)

Got 3 red lights, did the ’sync & eject’ and got code 0020……. someone help please please please ! ! !

Comment by kieron — November 13, 2007 @ 2:35 pm

I found the 0020 problem to be the x clamp. I removed my xclamps and just used screws. they were the M5-0 thread. what was happening is the metal piece in the xbox was pushing the x clamp up which in turn pushed the heatsink up and off of the gpu just enough make an air pocket so the heatsink compound had no connection. this then made the xbox overheat instantly. this worked great for me until one day i go to turn mine on and now i have a 0001 problem. my power supply surged. Lighting hit my building and blew ONLY my xbox and my microwave. go figure.

Comment by Beaner — November 22, 2007 @ 4:47 pm

Personally this is all Microsoft’s fault for rushing to ship it’s console before any of the competition can so they will have a head start. First they ship an inferior product, then they discontinue titles for their old system so people will have to get a 360 just to have new games. Thank god companies like Sony aren’t so money grubbing as to force you to upgrade in order to play…and beyond that ship a finished product…pretty sad Microsoft…pretty sad.

I think I may have solved the “1002″ error code for the XBOX 360. Here is my recent experience:

I repair game consoles, a good deal of them are 360’s. After encountering error code “1002″ on a machine I decided to look into the SATA theory. I replaced the SATA cable on mine with a brand new PC SATA cable I had tested and knew worked. Error 1002 from the “Light 4 Only” section now became a screen error code “E66″. L noticed the drive had been replaced with a different drive that was not the correct one. Needless to say, I was able to fix the problem and I think the original “1002″ was simply a faulty SATA cable or connection.

X-box sucks / microsoft sucks . If you have a defective product it should be recalled or repaired at the manufacturers expense, not the consumers!

Hi. Ok, everyone says error code 0001 is a power supply problem. But I have tried a different PSU and still the same: red rings, no fan power and the brief red light from orange standby. I have taken the system apart several times: for the x-clamp fix, then again a second time, and again to clean the laser and again after it stopped reading discs (”Unplayable Disc”). I even did pot adjustments and nothing made it read. After putting it back together from the pot adjustment, I got the 3 reds and error code 0001…Any ideas?

i think all consumers make mistakes from time too time …just like us …so give em some little respect…be honest…microsoft arent totally responsable…
so use your head ..if done the thing wrong like i did (break the seal,as cos it definately..smell like toxic…and my friends have asma….nearly burnt my lammy floor..) yep you get it….

so if they dont help..this way…HONESTY!
get a mate buy a brand new one swap em…send it back…then it gets sorted proper….

I got E74 with the 1 red light… With the lines on the screen and all… the 1022 secondary code… And I found out it was the TIM on the heatsink for the GPU from research… But my xbox is on the amp for my surround sound… and the in a corner… so could the amp have resulted in the TIM melting… or could the amp not have done anything because I had it there for a bout 9 days before the E74.. If you guys know a possible answer to my question it would be greatly appreciated… thanks

I have an ms28 drive i used i prep 007 to boot up a usb drive in the process
somehow the cfw got spoofed to a ms25 i used dsam to read and fsam to flash
once i flashed i had the 4th light on and error code 1002 i look at the error
codes on here and said that it was unknown i went back and changed the cfw to
ms28 reflashed and the 4th light went away. didnt know if that would help for
the 1002 error code that is unknown.
Thanks
